Artist Spotlight

Mabel Saccomanno

Mabel is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Windham, CT. She graduated in 2024 from Eastern Connecticut State University with a B.A. in Studio Art and a minor in Digital Media and Design. While her work dabbles in many forms of making, her primary practice revolves around relief and silkscreen printmaking, digital illustration, and materially-driven sculptures. Many of Mabel’s pieces are also language and narrative focused. She has written and illustrated four artist books, which she plans on screen-printing onto thrifted bedsheets, as well as multiple visual companions for poems and cheeky catchphrases.

Conceptually, Mabel’s work is informed by her experience working as a line cook and much of her work aims to capture sensorial experiences and rhythms associated with labor-based jobs. Mabel’s work also reflects a practice of observation and close-looking as a means of appreciating mundane whimsy. Her work seeks to present and highlight the eccentricity of daily modern life, drawing attention to the humor and specificity of the many “vignettes” that hide within our quotidian lives. She especially enjoys using comical juxtaposition and anachronism and frequently features moments during which historical elements collide with the drapings of our contemporary world, emphasizing the specificity of our current era while simultaneously encouraging the viewer to see the endearing and unchanging nature of humanity.

Check out Mabel’s work on the walls of The Cellar for the entire month of November!
